Richard Piercy is a pharmacist running ZEST - a chemists shop and an online business from the heart of London’s Soho. Richard gave us this appraisal of his business and how Cogent Design made an effective contribution to his business

‘I started my ecommerce site in 2003 because my shop turnover had reached a plateau whilst my overheads were rising relentlessly. My first site was pretty basic and to be honest I copied other sites. By 2007 the site looked really tired and I was not making much progress.

I knew I needed fresh thinking and spoke to a number of web development and design agencies. I picked Cogent Design because they were very good at asking questions and making suggestions. The other companies talked a lot about their technology but Cogent focused on my business and my customers and how we could be more appealing to them. I’d never had a serious conversation about my brand before.

We quickly agreed that discounting was not the way to go, we needed to sell higher value items at a better margin and that needed a more up-market image.

However we could not become elitist and we needed good promotional initiatives such as email offers to our existing customers.

When it came to the design, Cogent showed me a whole range of possibilities and I remember we were struck by a French site with beautiful coloured backgrounds. Their final design looked fresh and bang on target for my market with easy navigation and good product presentation.
